What is Non-Scalpel Vasectomy?
A non-scalpel vasectomy differs from a regular vasectomy (the ‘snip’), but is just as effective. A regular vasectomy is a surgical procedure that involves cutting the tubes (the vas deferens) that carry the sperm from the testes to the penis.
A vasectomy aims to prevent sperm from mixing with the rest of the ejaculate fluid (semen). Sperm account for less than 10% of the ejaculate fluid.
Vasectomy is a safe and effective means of permanent contraception/sterilisation for a male. About 1 in 4 men over the age of 40 have had a vasectomy.
What Does a Non-Scalpel Vasectomy Procedure Involve?
The vasectomy is performed in the doctor’s private rooms under local anaesthetic, and usually takes around 30 minutes.
The operation can be done using a scalpel or no-scalpel technique. Both methods are equally effective at sterilisation.
The no-scalpel technique involves a sharpened instrument used to puncture the skin over the vas deferens, making an opening in the skin of about 1cm. Once the doctor identifies the tubes, they are cut, and a small segment is removed.
The ends of the tube are then sealed with a stitch or treated with heat.
Supportive underwear or jock strap is used to hold the bandage in place and apply pressure to the scrotum.
