FAQ's
Your Questions Answered
Considering a vasectomy is a significant decision, and it’s natural to have questions. Whether you’re just starting to explore your options or you’ve already made up your mind and want to know what to expect, we’re here to help you feel informed and confident every step of the way.
Is it painful?
Most men are surprised by how manageable the experience is. The main sensation is the local anaesthetic injection – a brief sting. The procedure itself is typically felt as mild pressure rather than pain. Mild scrotal discomfort in the days following is normal and expected.
What happens to sperm after a vasectomy?
The testes continue to produce sperm, but it is reabsorbed naturally by the body – a normal process with no health implications.
How long does recovery take?
Most men are back at a desk-based job within 2 to 3 days. Those in physically demanding roles should discuss timing with Dr Indi. Full physical activity, including exercise and sport, can generally resume after 1 to 2 weeks.
What can I expect in the first few days?
Some scrotal swelling, bruising and mild aching is normal. Rest and ice on the day of the procedure, supportive underwear for the first week, and over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen) as needed. Dr Indi will provide a detailed care pack on discharge.
When can I resume sexual activity?
Generally after 7 days, once comfortable. Contraception must continue until the 12-week semen analysis confirms clearance.
When can I exercise again?
Light activity and walking from day 3 or 4. Swimming and light cardio after 1 week. Cycling and contact sports should be avoided for approximately 3 weeks. Dr Indi will advise based on your individual recovery.
What are the risks of vasectomy?
No procedure is entirely without risk. Dr Indi will discuss all of the following at your consultation:
- Bleeding or haematoma – uncommon, and usually resolves without intervention.
- Infection – rare. If it occurs, it typically responds well to a course of antibiotics.
- Sperm granuloma – a small nodule of scar tissue that can form at the procedure site. Usually unnoticeable and requires no treatment.
- Congestive epididymitis – discomfort caused by pressure in the epididymis. Manageable with anti-inflammatory medication in most cases.
- Post-vasectomy pain syndrome – a rare condition where discomfort persists beyond the expected recovery period.
Most cases are mild and resolve over time. This is discussed fully at consultation.
